08 January 2021 Carevan happy to be dishing up again

WANGARATTA Carevan Inc is back doing what they do best by serving delicious meals to those in need.

The volunteer organisation was unable to operate for most of 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, but has enjoyed being able to serve the community free meals just in time for the lead up to the festive period as restrictions eased.

Wangaratta Carevan Inc president John Houghton said he was pleased to see families and those struggling coming for meals, since the van began operating again every Tuesday and Wednesday night at Apex Park.

"We've worked right through, we haven’t stopped but our numbers aren't quite there to justify a third night so we're still doing two nights a week," Mr Houghton said.

"We put together some Christmas hampers and a few decorations and Christmas stockings to make it a little bit more Christmassy."

Mr Houghton said due to current COVID restrictions, however, the van is only able to serve takeaway meals and are unable to set up tables and chairs.

"The volunteers are really good but we're still looking for team leaders to help give us a hand and take the pressure off the main organisers," he said.

"We'll stick with two nights but we're going to reassess at the end of February and see if we go back to Bindall Avenue or stay at Apex Park."

The van is located at Apex Park every Tuesday and Wednesday night from 6pm to 7pm.
